Simplifying Education Management
Wiley, Wayne C.
Technology & Learning, v24 n11 p28 Jun 2004
Managing district information, web sites, and data security as well as supplying information on-demand are just a few of the tasks causing educational administrators to seek new solutions these days. The answer is to streamline the business of running schools by putting all information in one place so coordinated data and files can be accessed. Then it's simple to organize and view related information, create reports, share documents safely with others over a network or the Web, and make data available to people on the go. With ten schools and 5,600 students, Maryland's Caroline County Public Schools system is the smallest but most advanced in the state in deploying information technology to save time and improve principal, staff, and teacher productivity. Using FileMaker Pro to manage its Intranet allows administrative, student, and auxiliary information to be available on demand. The district has more than 20,000 records that include administrative data such as policy manuals, curriculum guides and technology maintenance requests, student data including emergency contact information, test data and grades, and auxiliary data such as special education, student management and planning information. By using FileMaker software, this district has been able to shorten the time it needs to deliver service and support, provide accurate and up to date information quickly to all staff, and supply instructions and solutions for teachers. Tips for districts needing to get a head start on effective data management using FileMaker Pro's starter solutions are also discussed.
