University Articulation, 1985-86 Academic Year: Provincial Report. Research Report 87-01.
Forrester, G. C.; Hamaura, R.
Information is provided on the academic performance and program selections of students transferring from community colleges in British Columbia (BC) to the three BC universities during the 1985-86 academic year, with reference to information from preceding years. Data for college transfer students are compared to data for direct-entry students (i.e., students entering the universities directly from secondary schools). Highlighted findings include the following: (1) 3,014 college transfer students entered the BC universities in 1985-86; (2) of these, 1,806 (60%) had completed 1 year of university equivalent credit and 747 (25%) had completed 2 or more years of university equivalent credit; (3) students from "metropolitan" colleges represented 62% of all college transfers, while"urban/rural" colleges represented 32% and "remote" colleges accounted for 7%; (4) the total number of college transfers grew steadily over the past 6 years from 2,407 transfers in 1980-81 to 3,014 in 1985-86; (5) transfer students generally selected the university closest to home; (6) a higher percentage of college transfer students than direct-entry students entered the field of education, while a lower percentage selected science; and (7) at all three universities and for all student groups, students' academic performance was better during their second year than their first year. Reports for individual colleges are appended. (Author/EJV)
