Social workers understand that assessing the implications of a policy for individual citizens like Veronica, a 51 year-old African American woman whose retirement will be jeopardized by President Bush's plan for social security, is often a good yardstick by which to measure the impact of a change. Moreover, social workers understand that policy change in the United States flows from the political process as informed, when allowed, by rational analysis. They know that the social security system has been subject to extensive analysis, evaluation, and monitoring since its inception. Drawing on the case of her friend Veronica, the author illustrates the impact of President Bush's proposed individual retirement accounts on the retirement benefits of Americans currently in their fifties. She also calls on fellow social workers to uphold their moral and professional obligation to maintain the integrity of the American social security system--to ensure that President Bush will not take the security out of social security--for Veronica or any American.
