Validation of Subject Areas of CAS Professional Studies Standards for Master's Level Student Affairs Professional Preparation Programs
Young, Dallin George; Dean, Laura A.
Journal of College Student Development, v56 n4 p386-391 May 2015
The standards for Master's Level Student Affairs Professional Preparation Programs, first published in 1986, were among the first standards published by the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS; Ebbers & Kruempel, 1992). With the latest revision in 2012, the CAS standards for preparation of student affairs professionals at the master's level are valuable in that they "provide criteria by which an academic program of professional preparation can judge its educational efforts" (CAS, 2012, p. 349), based on a consensus of experts in the profession. A questionnaire was designed for this study using the CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education (CAS, 2009), containing 76 learning outcomes from master's programs. These items were organized around five areas of study: (a) Student Development Theory; (b) Student Characteristics and Effects of College on Students; (c) Individual and Group Interventions; (d) Organization and Administration of Student Affairs, and (e) Assessment, Evaluation, and Research. Using a 5-point Likert-type scale from 1 (strong disagreement) to 5 (strong agreement), participants rated their level of agreement to statements assessing their ability to do each learning outcome. To identify related groups of outcomes, the authors conducted an exploratory factor analysis. They chose principal axis factoring as the extraction method, as not all data were assumed to be distributed normally across each item. In conclusion it was found that evidence-based approaches to identifying important areas of the curriculum should continue to guide the standards for preparation at the master's level and their implementation.
