Family-Centred Care: A Critical Perspective
Hjorngaard, Tina
Physical & Occupational Therapy in Pediatrics, v31 n3 p243-244 Aug 2011
This commentary is informed by the author's multiple perspectives as a parent of a 12-year-old girl with cerebral palsy, as a social worker, and as a critical disability advocate and activist. While the author occupies these subject positions simultaneously, they are not necessarily always confluent with one another. She struggles with, and is, at times, conflicted by living, working, and parenting in a society that holds various views of disability and in particular how and where children with disabilities fit into the social tapestry. The foundation of some of these differing and conflicted views of disability stem from two dominant ideological perspectives, (1) the medical model of disability; and (2) the social model of disability. The medical view is on the basis of historically hegemonic Eurocentric empiricism, where measurable standards of "normal" are the ideal. The social view of disability is a historically situated, political, and social response by people within disability communities to the oppression they have experienced by a society that structurally excludes the full participation and citizenship of people with disabilities. From a self-reflective perspective, making informed choices about and for the author's child is simple enough when the choice is in line with her personal political values.
