The newspaper is a familiar tool to many teachers. This book explores another use for the newspaper in the classroom. As an aid in the teaching and remediating of basic mathematics skills, the newspaper adds variety to classroom instruction. The suggested newspaper activities and teaching ideas presented here are specifically designed to reinforce the Minimum Student Performance Standards identified by the Florida Department of Education for grade eleven. Activities included are: rounding of numbers; putting numbers in order; fractions; operation of whole numbers and decimals; percentage; measurement; estimation; and interpreting graphs, tables and maps. The corresponding skill number, needed materials, newspaper activities for skill reinforcement, and an activity sheet are provided for each activity. A list of resource materials is included. (YP)
