Information Commons Features Cutting-Edge Conservation and Technology
Gilroy, Marilyn
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v76 n7 p59-62 Mar 2011
This article features Richard J. Klarchek Information Commons (IC) at Loyola University Chicago, an all-glass library building on the shore of Chicago's Lake Michigan that is not only a state-of-the-art digital research library and study space--it also runs on cutting-edge energy technology. The building has attracted attention and visitors from around the world who see it as a case study in sustainable projects that offer visionary architecture and client-friendly interior spaces. The combination has made the library a very popular place. The IC was a joint project of the university's instructional Technology Services division and library personnel. The collaboration is carried through in current operations with technology support staff available to handle technical problems as opposed to research questions. Equally impressive is that the IC sets new standards for environmental friendliness. The 67,000-square foot structure integrates architectural and engineering systems to maximize thermal comfort and indoor air quality while reducing energy consumption. The building has received its share of acclaim from a number of environmental and architectural organizations. It was named best New Construction-Chicago by the Chicago Building Congress. It also won the LEAF (Leading European Architects Forum) Award for Best Use of Technology, and it was the winner of the 2010 First Place ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) Society Level Technology Award.
