North Carolina State Board of Education, Raleigh.
This abstract covers the breadth of higher education activities in the state of North Carolina during 1971 from simple counts of degrees conferred to a complex analysis of the flow of student transfers among institutions. Some of the highlights of the findings are: (1) 148,708 full-time students were enrolled in N.C. colleges and universities with 66.6% of these enrolled in public institutions; (2) more than 9,700 new undergraduate transfer students were enrolled in public and private institutions; (3) 19,851 bachelor's degrees were granted, an increase of 1,261 over 1970; (4) first professional degrees increased 11% over 1970, master's degrees increased by 8%, and doctorates increased 14%; (5) the percentage of full-time faculty with doctor's degrees varied from 67.7 to 20.7 among senior institutions; (6) the total library expenditures for the fiscal year were $19,083,394; (7) public and private senior institutions enrolled 62,229 persons in noncredit extension courses; (8) the median SAT scores for entering freshmen were 455 on the verbal and 493 on the mathematical test; (9) financial aid at all institutions varied greatly with averages per recipient ranging from $148 to $1,193; and (10) almost one-half of all students at public institutions were housed in college-owned residence halls.
