Designing Effective Online Instruction: A Handbook for Web-Based Courses
Koontz, Franklin R.; Li, Hongqin; Compora, Daniel P.
Rowman & Littlefield Education
The designing of online courses requires a radical change in the way the instruction is designed and presented to the student. To date, however, there are no research-based models, using a systems approach, that are available to design Web-based instruction. This book introduces the ASSIST-ME Model, an instructional design model for Web-based instruction. This model, based on a recent Delphi research study, offers an instructional design procedure specifically intended for the uniqueness of online courses. Data obtained from a panel of professional instructional designers were synthesized into an instructional design model that contains essential elements to be included in the design process. This text gives a step-by-step procedure that explains how online instruction may be designed. Benefits of the ASSIST-ME Model are: (1) Allows maximum flexibility when creating effective instruction which permits the instructor to develop materials in order of preference once the analysis step has been completed; steps can be omitted when necessary; (2) Eliminates the trial-and-error approach of not knowing if the instruction is effective; (3) Reduces the amount of design time once the model has been used; and (4) Increased student learning in a reasonable time. This book should be used by faculty who teach instructional design courses, professional instructional designers, and teacher faculty who design instruction for online courses.
