Instructor Resource Manual for Cooperative Education Seminars: Non-Verbal Communication [and] Reader Centered Writing. Cooperative Education, Book 2.
Peterson, Jane
The second in a series of manuals designed for instructor/coordinators of Richland College's cooperative education seminars, this volume contains two learning modules focusing on nonverbal communication and business writing. In addition to stating student objectives and listing additional resources, each module introduces basic concepts and principles in an overview for instructors designed to generate student development and individual and group interaction. The nonverbal communication module begins with a review of the types of nonverbal cues and their functions, including information on cues which regulate conversation and those which express emotion. In addition, the module examines the relationship between verbal and nonverbal messages and the relationship between speaker and listener in terms of immediacy, power, and responsiveness. Case histories to be used as examples in lectures or class discussions or as the basis of role-playing or written exercises are included. The business writing module describes effective written communication in business; compares reader-centered and writer-centered writing in terms of content, organization, and style; explains ways to achieve reader-centered writing; and describes the plain language movement. This module contains exercises on avoiding errors that bother executives and on writing memos. (DAB)
