Background, principles, and procedures of industrial design are presented in this student manual. Chapter I describes the emergence of industrial design as a profession and emphasizes specific designers and their contributions to the field. A twenty question objective test is included. Chapter II presents ten principles of well-designed products. Five student activities (creative problem-solving, re-design, and critique exercise) and a twenty question objective test are included. Two industrial design case studies and a twenty question objective test comprise chapter III. Chapter IV describes the design problem-solving process. Problem stating, alternative statements, ideation, brainstorming and the Teague approach are presented. Three student activities are included. Visual communications in the design process are described in chapter V. Topics include sketching, perspective, incorrect proportion, improper conveyance, convergence, visual distortion, drawing shapes, rendering, line drawings, and matting. The use of models is covered in chapter VI including preliminary study models, appearance evaluation models, modelmaking tips, contour drawing, and working drawing. The concluding chapter describes the use of presentations as a means of conveying ideas to others. A related document, CE 018 579, the teacher's manual, is available separately. (JH)
