Cognitive Apprenticeship as an Instructional Strategy for Solving Corporate Training Challenges
Chan, Peter; Miller, Ronald; Monroe, Eula
TechTrends: Linking Research and Practice to Improve Learning, v53 n6 p35-41 Nov 2009
Cognitive apprenticeship is a teaching approach proponed by social constructivist educators that scaffolds upon students' "zones of proximal development" in authentic situations. It is an effective approach used by teachers of instructional technology when teaching student practitioners. Nevertheless, implementation of instructional design solutions is an issue faced by developers at all levels of business and education because of the high cost of developing a quality instructional product. In this article, the authors describe a unique strategy built upon a partnership between a corporation and a university in which student instructional technologists were involved in helping solve training deficits. They discuss cognitive apprenticeship as an instructional strategy for solving corporate training challenges. While instructional technology is often associated with being a high-cost solution and is thus sometimes avoided by businesses, this strategy improves corporate training at a low cost to the business.
