Texas A&M University is a research extensive institution located in College Station. More than 45,000 students attend the university (about 20% are graduate or professional students). Academically, the university is known for its engineering, business, and agricultural and veterinary medicine programs, although there are more than 150 programs of study. The university operates under a "strong college model"; functions are decentralized and fairly independent. There are 10 vice presidents in the president's cabinet. The Division of Student Affairs, with more than 600 full-time staff, reports through the executive vice president and provost. The division comprises 16 departments. The Division of Student Affairs' mission is "to facilitate student learning both in and out of the classroom by providing continuously improving, high-quality services and developmental opportunities while fostering an inclusive campus community in support of the educational mission of Texas A&M University." The Student Affairs departments themselves vary in the amount and nature of contact with faculty. The differences among cooperation, collaboration, and integration are not clearly defined when it comes to reporting faculty involvement in the Division of Student Affairs. Many use the terms interchangeably when in reality they reflect very different relationships. The staff in the Division of Student Affairs cooperate well, collaborate at every opportunity, and are working toward true integration of academic and cocurricular experience as one seamless learning experience. This chapter provides a glimpse of student affairs assessment at Texas A&M University including a specific example of assessment, tips to implementing assessment at an institution, and barriers encountered when implementing the process at Texas A&M University.
