To overcome limitations on nurses' teaching skills, staff shortages, and shorter hospitalizations, a patient education program uses varied methods (one-to-one, small group, videotape, telephone coaching) and aids (teaching standards, patient handbooks, skills checklists) to help nurses teach patients self-care techniques.
