Fitness Promotion Strategies for K-12 Physical Education Programs
Hill, Grant; Turner, Bud
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v18 n2 p31-34 Nov-Dec 2004
In recent years efforts have been made to emphasize the need for physical education by showing how physical activity helps students reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease; strengthen bones and muscles; supply energy, reduce stress, and help maintain a healthy body weight. This article describes a variety of proactive fitness strategies incorporated by physical educators with the goal of improving student activity and fitness. While each of these strategies can be effective in promoting more active lifestyles, there are factors that make their implementation challenging. The authors provide a rationale for each of the fitness promotion strategies, descriptions of obstacles that may hinder their implementation, and suggestions for overcoming these obstacles. By utilizing proactive strategies to overcome obstacles that inhibit many students from increasing their activity and fitness levels, physical educators can make a significant, long-term contribution to the health and quality of life of each of their students.
