Joint Reading between Mothers and Their Head Start Children: Vocabulary Development in Two Text Formats.
Pellegrini, A. D.; And Others
Discourse Processes, v19 n3 p441-63 May-Jun 1995
Finds that children's word recall was best predicted by responsive maternal strategies, such as encouraging children to talk about the text, and children's modeling maternal strategies; also, word recall and vocabulary was significantly correlated with children's language generated around traditional format texts (trade books), not familiar format texts (newspaper toy advertisements).
