Who Asks the Questions?
Hervey, Sheena
Teaching Pre K-8, v37 n1 p68-69 Aug-Sep 2006
From a very young age, children actively strive to make sense of their world through constant questioning. The ability to ask questions comes naturally for young children, but such natural inclination does not continue because it teachers who ask most of the questions. Sheena Hervey suggests that teaching students how to pose questions is a critical reading strategy since students will need to have strategies to deal with the volume, range, and complexity of print and electronic sources and the need to be able to read in many ways. Questioning enables students to focus their reading, delve deeper into the text, clarify meaning, and critically reflect on what they have read. The article contains a diagram that shows how students take more responsibility by asking questions as they move from listening to teachers model questioning strategies to asking their own questions to deepen their comprehension.
