Systematic Phonics Instruction Helps Students Learn To Read: Evidence from the National Reading Panel's Meta-Analysis.
Ehri, Linnea C.; Nunes, Simone R.; Stahl, Steven A.; Willows, Dale M.
Review of Educational Research, v71 n3 p393-447 Fall 2001
Conducted a quantitative meta-analysis evaluating the effects of systematic phonics instruction compared to unsystematic or no phonics instruction on learning to read using 66 treatment-control comparisons derived from 38 experiments. Results show that systematic phonics instruction is effective and should be implemented as part of literacy programs to teach beginning reading and to remediate reading difficulties. (SLD)
