Why Bilingual Education Policy Is Needed: A Philosophical Response to the Critics.
Moses, Michele S.
Bilingual Research Journal, v24 n4 p333-54 Fall 2000
Criticisms against bilingual education policy are myopic and focus on nostalgic notions of Americanization and assimilation. Bilingual education supports heritage-language students' cultural identities and expands their contexts of choice, thus developing their self-determination and preparing them to participate in democracy. Federal policies requiring bilingual education to be offered to heritage-language students should be maintained. (Contains 46 references.) (TD)
