Many academic departments are damaged by deep resentments and intractable debates. Those that can't survive undergo administrative intervention. The experiences of three such departments are examined: anthropology at Columbia University (New York); literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz; and philosophy at Yale University (Connecticut).
