Purported graduate school applicants requested their faculty advisors to complete letter of recommendation forms. The forms had identical questions, but two were marked the same--either "confidential" or "nonconfidential"--and the other was oppositely marked. Significant differences in faculty responses were found, with students rated lower on "confidential" forms. (GC)
