Talking about Science: The Case of an Electronic Conversation.
Muscella, Deborah; DiMauro, Vanessa
This research study analyzed an electronic conversation that occurred on the LabNet network, an electronic network for science teachers. A conversation about the nature of science that occurred for eight weeks among ten science teachers was analyzed in order to identify the characteristics of messages that start and sustain a conversation and to examine the ideas presented in messages that are ignored. Important issues about telecommunications' potential as an innovative approach for professional development are highlighted. This research suggests that an electronic network such as LabNet can create conditions that enhance teachers' knowleddge of science and foster their colleagueship. Participating on electronic networks with colleagues in distant towns, however, has the potential to contribute to the isolation many teachers already feel in their own schools. Identifying the factors that precipitate and support reflective conversations on electronic networks may encourage teacher dialogue and collaboration in both proximate and distant communities.
