Raising Champions: A Parents' Guide for Nurturing Their Gifted Children.
Sayler, Micheal
This guide for parents of gifted children in Texas is intended to provide general information and sources of additional help. Section 1 examines the meaning of being gifted and talented and provides the Texas definition of giftedness, lists of characteristics and concomitant problems of gifted and talented children, and a discussion of the highly gifted. Section 2 specifically addresses the parent's role, including common parental concerns, parent advocacy, how to start a parent group, and communicating with the school. The third section looks at the role of the school. This section provides brief histories of the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented (TAGT) and gifted education in general, a description of gifted/talented program models and options (noting that special grouping is recommended by the TAGT), a discussion of the "labeling" issue, an outline of gifted identification processes, and a summary of the state mandate and structure of Texas gifted education. The final section lists resources, including services available through TAGT, four organizational resources, a glossary of "educationese" terminology, and an annotated bibliography containing 116 references.
