Project MAPP. The Learning Strategies Sampler # 2. Implementing the Instructional Program. A Competency-Based Adult Education Learning System.
Maryland State Dept. of Education, Baltimore.
This resource and reference guide provides complete listings of learning activities that integrate basic and life skill learning. It is designed to assist adult basic education (ABE) teachers in the implementation of a competency-based learning system that emphasizes the integration of basic and life skills learning. The philosophy of and introduction to the instructional program are provided in this volume. Section I provides the scope and sequence for the basic skills in listening, reading, writing, and mathematics. These basic skills are cross-referenced to related life skill learning strategies. An introduction to and explanation of critical thinking approaches are followed by thinking skill ideas and sample worksheets for two levels. A listing of commercial thinking skills materials is followed by information on writing approaches. Section II presents an extensive collection of suggested learning activities that integrate basic and life skills. Activities are labeled as appropriate for Level I or II ABE students. Many activities are complemented by reference material. An index of learning strategy activities is followed by the activities, divided into these categories: consumer economics, community resources, health, occupational knowledge, and government and law. There are two appendixes: (1) basic skill arrays; and (2) references and ideas on the collection and use of community materials. (YLB)
