This curriculum for a 1-semester or 1-year course in product design and planning contains information about the following topics: creativity, idea production techniques, problem solving, design fundamentals, design requirements, graphic communication, materials and processes, and safety. Course content is organized around the laboratory activities necessary to design and produce products. Some of the topics covered include the following: introduction to design; orthographic drawing, sketching, and dimensioning; graphic design; design in wood, plastic, and metal; individual project construction; and idea production techniques and cognitive-creative abilities. The guide contains competencies (task lists), student competency records, and management sheets. Management sheets, which serve as lesson outlines covering 1 or more days, include the following: an introduction, the performance objective, a task/competency statement, an equipment and supplies list, a performance standard, suggested references for teacher and student, activities, and evaluation criteria. Appendixes have the the following contents: definitions; course outlines; supplies and equipment lists; a suggested facility layout; information on creativity, pencil rendering techniques, ink rendering techniques, design requirements, human factors, design principles, the design process, idea production techniques, and cognitive creative abilities; sample design problems; a sample copyright form; evaluation criteria; and a 25-item bibliography.
