This report summarizes 1988-89 statistical data on student characteristics and educational outcomes for the Seattle (Washington) Public School District. Information is reported for the entire district, by racial group, and by type of school. The following demographic characteristics are reported: (1) 45.1 percent of the students are white and 54.9 percent of the students are non-white; (2) nearly 44 percent of the students do not live with both parents; (3) fewer high school students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches than elementary school or middle school students; (4) 9 percent of the bilingual students are limited-English-proficient; and (5) 8.1 percent of the students are enrolled in special education. The following student outcome measures are reported: (1) graduation rates vary considerably among ethnic groups; (2) academic grades awarded within each ethnic group vary widely; (3) overall grade point averages differ greatly among ethnic groups; (4) achievement test scores vary considerably from ethnic group to ethnic group and grade level to grade level; (5) high school students showed the strongest achievement gains over the last year; (6) substantially higher percentages of non-white students scored below the 25th percentile on achievement tests than white students; (7) absenteeism increases in the second semester; (8) suspensions increased over the last year and expulsions remained steady; (9) the number of students below grade level declined over the last year; and (10) the dropout rate is increasing.
