Substance Abuse among Youth with Disabilities. Prevention Research Update, Number Seven/Summer 1990.
Prendergast, Michael; And Others
This literature review focuses on the state of current knowledge concerning alcohol and other drug (AOD) abuse among people with developmental, learning, hearing, visual, and mobility impairments. The review is divided into four main sections. The first section addresses the limits of the available research-based information. The second section summarizes the evidence regarding the nature and prevalence of disabilities within the United States population, and of AOD use within disabled populations. The third section discusses correlates of use and risk factors. The fourth section provides an overview of prevention and intervention needs of this population as well as related issues. These are discussed in terms of the legal context, the social response, service barriers, current initiatives, generic versus specialized programs, AOD education, parent education and involvement, service provider education, and counter-enabling education. Group-specific needs are also considered. Detailed abstracts and author addresses are provided for 22 studies. An additional 136 references are listed, as are 7 substance abuse education and prevention materials and 23 programs and organizations (listed by state). Also provided is a listing of references by subject. (DB)
