ACRL University Library Statistics, 1988-89. A Compilation of Statistics from 114 Non-ARL University Libraries.
Bedford, Denise, Comp.
This 1988-1989 edition of Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) statistics presents data from 114 U.S. and Canadian libraries that are not members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and are not covered by the annual ARL statistics. This edition is published every 2 years. The 114 non-ARL libraries that returned questionnaires for this report (91.5%) were classified by the revised Carnegie classification as "Research Libraries" I and II and Doctorate Granting Colleges and Universities I and II, and included seven Canadian university libraries with similar scope and mission. The participating libraries reported holdings of 92,635,350 volumes and expenditures of $158,308,733 for the purchase of library materials. Nearly 11,581 people are employed by these libraries (2,984 professional, 5,468 support staff, and 3,102 full-time equivalent student workers). Data are provided in the areas of collections, serials, expenditures, enrollment, personnel, and interlibrary loan, and are presented in 17 tables ranking the order of each of the participating libraries for materials and collections (volumes, serials, microform); salaries and other operating expenses; circulation; number of library personnel, including the number of Ph.D. degrees; and student enrollment figures. In addition to this publication, the data files are presented in dBASEIII+, standard spreadsheet, and ASCII format. No systems knowledge is required to convert files for manipulation using LOTUS or VisiCalc software packages. (MAB)
