North Central Washington Business/Spanish Instruction Modules. Final Report.
Eley, Robert H.
The major objective of this project was to develop a series of specialized English-to-Spanish study modules for retail stores. The modules are to become part of the instruction in the small business, salesmanship, and advertising classes at Wenatchee Valley College (Washington). A minor objective was to survey the current perceived level of sales to Spanish-speaking customers in the Wenatchee area and to assess the perception of advertising media's interest in developing sales campaigns directed to the Spanish-speaking market. The survey portion of the study was conducted as a business class project. Students developed and used two survey forms, one for 60 retail firms and the other for local media and advertising agencies. Both surveys indicated that no particular effort has been made to develop onsite education programs and that the college should develop some type of program. The module portion of the project was conducted by a Spanish instructor and Spanish-speaking students. They made visits to various types of stores and then created 13 modules. The modules cover these businesses: auto repair and supplies, fast foods, supermarket, pharmacy, candy and tobacco, books and periodicals, photo shop, toilet articles, jewelry, sporting goods, small appliances, hardware, and most frequently purchased food items. (The bulk of this document consists of the modules, which are English-Spanish (vocabulary lists keyed to each type of business.) (KC)
