Voter Education Curriculum Guide.
National Association of Secondary School Principals, Reston, VA. Div. of Student Activities.
This basic voter resource book can be used as the basis for a self-contained unit or as a supplement to the Young Voter Campaign of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Materials, which are suitable for use in secondary social studies, government, and history courses, are divided into five parts. Following an introduction, Part I, "Appreciating the Right to Vote," contains background readings on the history and purpose of voting and two decision-making activities on exercising one's right to vote. Part II, "Understand Voter Registration," contains readings on the history, purpose, and principles of voter registration and exercises for holding a schoolwide registration and a community registration, recognizing and using voter machines, and understanding voter qualifications. Part III, "The Importance of Issues in Elections," consists of background information on issues of today and yesterday, and on special interest groups. Three exercises focus on the process of passing legislations, the issue referendum process, and issue analysis. Part IV, "Candidates, Their Views and Qualities," includes background readings and activities focusing on the process of nomination. "Participation in Campaigns and Elections," part V, contains background material and guidelines for conducting a mock convention. A list of resource materials and a glossary of political terms concludes the publication. (LP)
