Expanding Options. Facilitator's Guide--Support Staff Workshop.
Center for Studies of the Person, San Diego, CA.
This guide provides procedures and supporting materials for a sex equity workshop, targeted at school support staff, that is intended to expand awareness of sexism and to increase sex-affirmative behavior in the educational environment. The guide describes the content, process, and sequential learning experiences for three basic sessions and two optional sessions. Session 1 is organized to increase awareness of sexism and sex-role stereotyping and to provide a common vocabulary. Session 2 introduces participants to the legal ramifications of sexism, along with the relevant economic and employment facts. Session 3 discusses bias in language and the limitations of sex-role socialization. Optional Session 4, recommended for teacher aides, considers how to incorporate the workshop activities into classroom duties and how to share the activities with classroom teachers. Optional Session 5 applies assertiveness training to sex equity problems, and is aimed at the development of effective change agents. In addition to describing session-by-session procedures, this guide includes mini-lectures, activity guides, handout materials for the participants (assessment instruments, activity cards, readings, and worksheets), and transparency masters.
