AACR 2 Implementation Studies. SPEC Kit 68.
Association of Research Libraries, Washington, DC. Office of Management Studies.
Of the 53 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions that responded to a 1980 Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) call for Anglo American Cataloging Rules Second Edition (AACR 2) implementation studies, 37 had looked at the impact of the new code on library operations, while 16 indicated they had not done a formal study that could be shared. The concise summary that introduces the kit contains a brief description of the survey and an assessment of study methodologies by William Gray Potter of the University of Illinois Library. The kit comprises nine implementation studies and a list of additional studies and reports for loan to ARL members: (1) "A Five-Year Projection of the Impact of the Rule for Form of Heading in AACR 2 upon Selected Academic Library Catalogs" (Arlene Taylor Dowell); (2) "AACR 2 and the Wilson Library Card Catalog: What the Problem Is, How the Catalog Department Will Solve It" (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill); (3) "Technical Services Internal Planning Documents" (Yale University); (4) "AACR 2 Impact--Statistical Study" (University of Minnesota); (5) "Abstract,""Summary of Recommendations," and "Bibliography" from "Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Report of the WSUL Working Group on the Post-1980 Catalogs" (Wayne State University); (6) "Appendix C, AACR 2 Subcommittee Report on the Impact of AACR 2 on Morris Library's Catalogs and Cataloging" (Southern Illinois University); (7) "An Examination of LC Lists of Revised Headings for 1981" (Brown University); (8) "Appendixes A, B, and C: Estimate of the Cost of Three Ways of Integrating the AACR II Changes into the Existing Catalogs; AACR II Time Studies; Calculations Used to Determine Staff Required to Change Existing Cards to Conform to AACR 2" (University of Washington); (9) "How to Determine the Number of Unique Headings per Title" (Association of Research Libraries); and (10) a list of additional documents submitted by ARL members in response to the survey and available for loan to ARL members and SPEC subscribers.
