Christian Education Materials Evaluation for Special Needs Children.
Schaefer, Linda
The guide describes in detail seven curriculum materials appropriate for the Christian education of children with special needs (defined as children for whom many curriculum materials do not work effectively). The materials included were judged to work well with the child not able to learn or keep up or to function well with the lesson materials as it is presented in the ordinary Sunday School or religious education class. Materials were identified through conversations and communications with church groups and staff workers. Materials are evaluated in terms of 10 aspects (sample subtopics in parentheses): bibliographic information, instructional area and skills scope sequence; component parts of the materials (ease of modification, independent use of parts); level of the material (readability level, interest level, comprehension level); quality (nature of illustrations, cost); format (special equipment, clear directions); support materials (availability); time requirements (flexibility for scheduling); field tests and research data; and method, approach, or theoretical bases (compatibility with ongoing instruction). Included with the document is a list of strategies for individualizing and adapting activities for special needs children. (CL)
