Replacing a January 1980 publication of the same title, this collection of cost tables and other documentation from library materials cost studies conducted by members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) or by library vendors contains excerpts from: (1) local cost studies conducted at Colorado State University, Indiana University, Iowa State University, and Brown University; (2) local cost justifications using national data, compiled at Brown University and University of California; (3) automated local cost studies, conducted at University of Alberta, University of Georgia, and Vanderbilt University; and (4) vendor cost studies, conducted by Blackwell North America, Ballen Booksellers International, Coutts, and Faxon. A concise summary of related issues and trends discusses utilization of local cost data versus published data found in the "Bowker Annual,""Library Journal," and other sources; difficulties in obtaining foreign price information; the various uses of cost index data; characteristics of local cost studies; state cost index systems; the applicability of general published indexes to research materials costs; development of an academic book price index; standardization of price index criteria; and the provision of cost information from bibliographic utilities or as a byproduct of automated acquisition systems.
