PROTEACH, an extended preservice teacher preparation program at the University of Florida (Gainesville), is a five-year program that culminates in a master's degree. Four papers describing PROTEACH are included. "PROTEACH: An Extended Preservice Teacher Preparation Program" (David C. Smith) provides an introduction to the program's goals, components, and development. "The Work of the Task Forces" (Suzanne L. Krogh), focusing on the professional studies component, reports on the workings of one of these task forces in detail. In "The Generic Teaching Component" (Dorene D. Ross), a research-based framework of generic domains was determined, focusing on: (1) ability to observe phenomenon objectively; (2) diagnosis of student abilities, learning difficulties, environmental conditions, and programs of instruction; (3) instructional planning and management; and (4) effective interpersonal skills.
