Indian Children's Books.
Gilliland, Hap
A bibliography of books about American Indians provides annotations and evaluations by Indian educators and others for each book, and indicates grade level, and whether the book would be recommended for Indian children. Chapter 1 discusses organization of material and lists the evaluators. Chapter 2 addresses problems (inaccuracies, omission of facts, attitudes of writers) in using available children's books about Indians, and gives suggestions for teachers on selection and use of books about Indian life and culture. Chapter 3 is the annotated list of books, approximately 1,652 entries, published between 1826 (James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans") and 1978, in alphabetical order by title; entries contain an evaluation (highly recommended, recommended, acceptable, questionable, very questionable--Indian evaluator would not want to expose his own children to this book), interest level (grade level), readability level, number of pages, publication date, and price (if available). Chapter 4 lists all of the books by tribe, region, and subject, so anyone interested in a particular tribe or subject will find a list of titles of relevant books, then can refer to chapter 3 for the annotations. Chapter 5 lists publishers of Indian books. Two maps showing locations of tribes mentioned are included. (MH)
