An Evaluation of the GATE Program in Operation during the 1980-81 School Year.
Payne, Holland I.
The report describes evaluation data on the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program for the Sacramento City Unified School District. Parents of elementary, junior high/middle, and senior high GATE students completed questionnaires regarding their children's reactions to GATE, staff answered surveys, and GATE's advisory committee responded to a questionnaire. Evaluation data presented include the following (sample findings in parentheses): program enrollment in 63 district schools; ethnic makeup of students (the percentage of Asian participating students recorded a drop from 1979-80 to 1980-81); parent evaluation responses (the majority of parents believed their children were stimulated as a result of enrichment experiences); effects of an alternative program, a school-within-a-school approach for GATE students; and teachers' comments (recommendations included the need for additional basic materials and greater teacher input into decision making). Among 12 conclusions were that members of the GATE Advisory Committee were very positive about GATE operations and that parents would like to see more classes of science, creative writing, music, art, and basic subjects. Recommendations center on resource listings, inservice training, and continuation of the alternative program. (CL)
