Model Job Description and Evaluation Standards for School Media Specialists.
Pfister, Fred C.; Vincelette, Joyce P.
Research Bulletin, v16 n3 Win 1983
Suggestions for providing more effective performance appraisals for school media specialists address questions of what performance items and evidence are appropriate for evaluating media specialists in schools of different levels and sizes, and what procedures will successfully involve media specialists, principals, and district level personnel. Administrators and media specialists in 14 schools in 4 Florida counties cooperated with the investigators to develop several sets of empirically-based job duty statements and performance measures for evaluating building level media specialists. Development procedures varied for each district. All 22 of one county's job activity/performance statements were developed locally and represent the full scope of the media specialists job. Each of the other countries' models includes descriptions of positive aspects and suggestions for improvement. Summary responses to interviews conducted in the schools illustrate overall reactions, priority objectives, reaction to using the model as a formal personnel appraisal instrument, and implementation needs. The study concluded that procedures for evaluating media specialists are inadequate, the models can improve performance appraisal, and they are congruent with current management trends. The appendices contain each model performance appraisal instrument. (Author/CM)
