This guide, the second in a series of three, provides the Spanish-speaking intermediate science student and teacher an opportunity to review selected science concepts and processes through activities which emphasize the applicability of scientific knowledge in the professional world. This guide is divided into three components. The first component helps the student to understand the relationship of science to careers in health by (1) discussing the role of chromosomes in our genetic makeup and the professionals who work in the field, (2) contrasting inherited and acquired characteristics, and (3) describing how the scientific principles of inherited characteristics are used by health workers. In the second component, students can examine the effects of soil erosion, weathering, and flooding through narratives about the activities of workers in agriculture and natural resources. The third component details those professions that are directly related to the environment. The activities in each of the components reinforce the student's skills in processes such as classifying, interpreting data, and controlling variables. Each activity contains an objective, key words, and a listing of materials needed to complete the learning experience. Simple experiments that students can perform have been included when applicable. In addition, the teacher is provided with a step-by-step outline of suggestions on how to implement the activity. An optional section in each component entitled "Home and Community" provides projects for extending the skills and knowledge gained to those areas. (NCR)
