Academic Science, R&D Funds, Fiscal Year 1980: Surveys of Science Resources Series. Detailed Statistical Tables.
National Science Foundation, Washington, DC. Div. of Science Resources Studies.
Statistical data on research and development (R&D) expenditures from the 1980 Survey of Scientific and Engineering Expenditures at Universities and Colleges are presented. Information was obtained from 514 schools and 19 federally funded R&D centers. In order to provide national totals for academic R&D expenditures, estimates were made for the approximately 9 percent of the survey population that did not respond to the questionnaire. The main items on the questionnaire include: total current expenditures for separately budgeted science and engineering (S/E) R&D by source of funds and the percentage of the total and federally financed portion that is considered basic research; total and federally financed current fund expenditures for separately budgeted R&D activities, by detailed S/E fields, and data in subdisciplines of engineering and environmental sciences; capital expenditures for S/E facilities and equipment for research, development, and instruction by broad S/E fields, including amounts from federal and other sources; and total and federally financed current fund research equipment expenditures disbursed in detailed S/E fields. Information is presented on the distribution of university and college responses by degree level. The highest response rate, 94 percent, was from doctorate-granting institutions where 98 percent of the R&D expenditures in S/E fields were disbursed. Comparative data from previous years are included in the statistical tables. Questionnaires are appended. (SW)
