In-service Education and Training of Teachers in the European Community. Collection Studies. Education Series No 8.
This report presents discussions of the status of inservice teacher education in the nine member states of the Commission of the European Communities. Each of the countries is treated independently, and the treatment differs according to the complexity and diversity of the situation. The countries included are: (1) United Kingdom (England and Wales); (2) Republic of Ireland; (3) Federal Republic of Germany; (4) Belgium; (5) Netherlands; (6) Luxembourg; (7) Denmark; (8) Italy; and (9) France. The first part of each essay generally consists of an overall survey of attitudes toward and availability of inservice teacher education, often citing a national survey or policy paper. The second parts of the papers turn to examples of local and national inservice programs. These include the Open University in England, Germany's Regional Pedagogical Centers, the Open School television program in the Netherlands, and France's 1972 "Declaration of Policy on the Continuous Training of Teachers in the Primary Sector." The final chapter synthesizes a common set of problems and formulates the guiding principles of a strategy which would be applicable to the various national situations studied. The model describes professional training that is both continuous and coordinated with schools and teacher centers. (FG)
