Proceedings of the 1980 Meeting [of the] Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group (Laval University, Quebec, Canada, June 6-10, 1980).
Contained in these proceedings are: (1) two lectures; (2) reports from four working groups, three review groups, and three special groups; and (3) a list of participants. Lecture I, by Caleb Gattengo, was entitled "Reflections of 40 Years of Work on Mathematics Teaching." Lecture II, by David Hawkins, was entitled, "Understanding Understanding Mathematics." The four working groups were: (1) The Teaching of Calculus and Analysis; (2) Applications of Mathematics for High School Students; (3) Geometry in the Elementary and Junior High Curriculum; and (4) Diagnosis and Remediation of Mathematical Errors. The review groups were: (1) Calculators and the School Curriculum; (2) Mathematics Education Research: What Is It About in Canada?; and (3) Vers Une Integration de la Recherche a la Formation et au Perfectionnement des Enseignants. The special groups were: (1) Problems; (2) Uses of Gattegno's number array; and (3) Mathematical films. A total of 51 participants made this the largest meeting ever, with 18 professors from Quebec included in this number. An official constitution and an election of officers occurred at this conference. (MP)
