Teaching Young Children with Special Needs. A Program Description.

The booklet describes a graduate program offered at Wheelock College (MA) in teaching preschool disabled children. It is explained that the program allows inservice students to work toward their degree while receiving on the job supervision as teachers or aides. The cooperating teachers receive support and a course voucher from the college for their services. Four roles of teachers are identified and competencies listed for each: evaluator, strategist/planner, teacher, and communicator. Admission guidelines are given, coursework is listed, and the use of minigrants for independent study are discussed. Program aspects said to be unique include a year long internship, exploratory days (site visits) and a multidisciplinary orientation. Program dissemination activities are considered. (CL)
