Financial Planning, Employee Benefits, and You. A Reading Workbook.
American Council of Life Insurance, Washington, DC. Education and Community Services.
This workbook for Adult Basic Education and Adult Literacy Program students uses financial planning and employee benefits as the content area for teaching reading skills. It is written so that students can work with the material with little help from the instructor. Part 1, the instructional phase, focuses on improvement of reading skills. Its three objectives are to see how ideas relate to each other (signal words), understand the meaning of a word from its use in the sentence (context clues), and understand the major concepts of written material (survey of written material). Part 2, the practice phase, is concerned with development of a better understanding of financial planning and employee benefits. Its two objectives are to list steps in financial planning, and use employee benefits to develop a personal and family financial plan. In each part an explanation of the individual skill/objective is followed by an example of how it is used and a written exercise. Answer keys are provided. Part 3 contains a reading test. (YLB)
