Addressed are the history, present status and future challenges of environmental communication, defined as "the process of planning, producing and dissemination, or conducting research related to, written, spoken and/or pictorial messages about the environment, environmental issues and/or environmental management." The focus of this monograph is the relationship of environmental communication to the environmental movement and the mainstream of general mass and interpersonal communication. Included are an analysis of various approaches and communications media, a case study, and a summary of how research in various behavioral and resource management fields can apply to environmental communication.
