Free Resources for Teaching About Japan.
Wojtan, Linda S.
This publication describes free print and audiovisual materials for teaching about Japan in elementary and secondary schools. The booklet was written to enable teachers to take advantage of the many free materials that are currently available. The first section cites sources of free materials in the United States. Names and addresses of groups such as Japanese embassies and consulate generals, Japanese national tourist organizations, offices of Japan Air Lines, offices of Japanese external trade organizations, and various professional organizations are listed. Another invaluable source of information is newsletters. A list of free periodic newsletters is included. Each year major corporations, foreign embassies, unions, and agencies of the United States government publish a variety of free and/or inexpensive teaching materials. Guides to publications which list where these materials can be obtained are described. The second section lists materials available from the Japanese embassy and consulate and other groups. Print material and many films are included. In the third and last section of the guide the author outlines the use of free Japanese materials in the curriculum. Print and nonprint materials for use in the following areas are listed: introduction to Japan, geography, history, law and political science, international relations, social studies, economics, religion and thought, literature/language, drama, art/music, and sports. Other resources include a role play on the position of the military in Japan, an analysis of the Constitution of Japan, a role-playing exercise on how to get along in Japanese society, Haiku activities, and a baseball game.
