Public Relations: Making an Impact.
Galloway, Vicki B.
This article deals with the task which the President's Commission gave the professional associations to mount a vigorous campaign to educate the nation about the critical need to learn other languages and customs. It deals with the campaign, first in terms of program planning to bridge the gap between where we are and where we want to be; and secondly, in terms of the means by which these efforts may be directed toward specific audiences, both within and outside the educational system. The first part analyzes the public relations program in three steps: (1) taking stock of the product, image, and present and potential clients; (2) identifying objectives; and (3) developing strategies for reaching the objectives. The second section of the article deals with improving the image of foreign language teachers, making connections with other colleagues and disciplines, and developing rewarding and challenging programs in order to attract and keep students. Externally, the profession must improve public relations with parents and other interested parties. Strategies have to be developed to put the necessity, importance, and attractiveness of language study in the public eye. Finally, it is noted that timing and good communications are very important.
