The Next Step Toward Equality: A Comprehensive Study of Puerto Ricans in the United States Mainland.
National Puerto Rican Forum, Inc., New York, NY.
This report presents data on the demographic, social, and economic characteristics of Puerto Ricans in the mainland United States and makes comparisons between the social, educational, and economic characteristics of Puerto Ricans and other Hispanic and ethnic groups and the total United States population. All data were taken from reports, studies, and surveys conducted by the government and national research organizations. Characteristics presented for the general Puerto Rican population and for special target groups (women, young people, and families) include: population, age, education, income, labor force participation, employment, unemployment, poverty, welfare, and health. The data indicate that Puerto Ricans are the most disadvantaged ethnic group in the mainland United States. An addendum compares data for Puerto Ricans in New York City with national data.
