Policy for the Education of Educators: Issues and Implications.
Appignani, Georgianna, Ed.; And Others
With the passage of the Schools of Education Assistance Act as part of the reauthorized Higher Education Act, institutions of teacher education have a long awaited federal mandate for their own redesign and redirection. This legislation provides a principle: that schools, colleges, and departments of education represent a valuable resource for the preparation of educational personnel--not only for the public schools, but also for social services in general. The papers presented in this volume offer a framework for future policies regarding the education of educators, and are organized into four topics: policy development, traditional roles and strengths, emerging needs, and collaborative models. The papers specifically discuss: (1) the need for policy development; (2) the implications of the demographics of teacher education on policy making; (3) the research and dissemination capacity of schools of education; (4) preparing educators for nonschool settings; (5) challenges for schools of education in the 1980's; (6) the educational needs of business and industry; (7) urban education; (8) federal involvement in educational personnel development; (9) intercollegiate collaboration; (10) collaboration between schools of education and other agencies; and (11) perspectives on policy development for teacher education.
