The Children's Attitude toward Reading Test (CHART) is presented, as well as the first draft of a technical manual describing its use. The test booklet consists of 36 unsystematically ordered pictures. Each picture represents a reading situation (instructional, school recreational, home recreational, and outdoor recreational reading) that has undergone content validation. Directly beneath each picture are three empty boxes, color coded to aid the children in identifying their responses. Instructions are read aloud to 166 students in kindergarten through grade 2. Students are directed to look at each picture and respond according to whether the picture shows him/her something he/she would like to do, would not like to do, or is not sure about. The student's response is marked in the appropriate box under each picture. In addition, subjects' self-ratings of their own attitude toward reading, and teachers' ratings of their students' attitude toward reading are used to estimate the students' attitude toward reading. Response data were analyzed for each of the grades, as well as the composite, and included internal consistency reliability coefficients for each of the four reading situations. (Author/RL)
